Pannavadi Parisal Thurai: A Coracle Ride Across Mettur Dam

On the Kolathur side of the Mettur Dam reservoir is Pannavadi Parisal Thurai, a landing where round coracles (parisal) carry people across the water. For local villagers it is an everyday crossing to the Dharmapuri side of the reservoir. For visitors it is one of the most peaceful things to do near Mettur: a slow ride on open water, with hills on every side.

What is a parisal?

A parisal is a round, bowl-shaped boat made of woven bamboo, covered underneath with a waterproof sheet and tar. The boatman steers it with a single paddle, and it can carry several people at a time. Coracles have been used on the Kaveri for centuries and are still the most common way to cross the reservoir at Pannavadi.

The coracle ride

  • The crossing: coracles go across to the Nagamarai side in Dharmapuri district. Locals use it to carry goods and even two-wheelers.
  • A short ride: if you only want to see the water, ask the boatman for a short round trip and come back to Pannavadi.
  • Fares: fares are small and set locally. Agree on the price and the route with the boatman before you get in.

When the water level is low, the old Jalakandeswarar temple and Nandi that stand in the reservoir near Pannavadi can sometimes be seen from the shore or the boat.

  • Early morning: calm water, cool air and soft light. The best time for photos.
  • Late afternoon: good light and sunset over the hills. Plan to be back on shore before dark.
  • After heavy rain or strong wind: coracles may not run. Ask locally before you set out.
