Mettur Tourist Places: 8 Places to Visit In and Around Mettur

Mettur is best known for its great dam across the Kaveri, but there is more to see here than one wall of stone. Here are the best Mettur tourist places, with approximate distances from our hotel in the centre of town.
1. Mettur Dam (Stanley Reservoir)

Completed in 1934, Mettur Dam holds back the Kaveri to form the Stanley Reservoir, one of the largest in Tamil Nadu. Its water irrigates the delta districts downstream, and the day the gates open for the delta each June is big news across the state. Walk along the viewpoints and watch the reservoir stretch to the hills. About 2 km from the hotel.
2. Mettur Dam Park

Laid out at the foot of the dam, the Park is Mettur’s favourite family outing, with lawns, trees, a children’s play area and views of the dam wall. Go in the late afternoon when it is cooler. It gets busy on weekends and holidays. About 2 km.
3. 16 Kannu Madhagu (16-Vent Sluice)

This long bridge with sixteen sluice gates releases surplus water when the reservoir is full. When the gates are open, the rushing water is one of the most dramatic sights in the region. Watch from a safe distance and follow local instructions. About 4 km.
4. Sri Muniyappan Kovil

A much-loved temple near the dam, where many families stop to pray before or after their visit. About 2 km.
5. Mecheri Bhadrakaliamman Temple

One of the best-known Amman temples in Salem District, drawing devotees from across the region, especially on Tuesdays, Fridays and festival days. About 16 km.
6. Nangavalli Lakshmi Narasimhar Temple

An old and peaceful Narasimhar temple in Nangavalli, easy to combine with Mecheri on the same morning. About 20 km.
7. Hogenakkal Falls (day trip)

Upstream on the Kaveri, Hogenakkal’s falls and rocky gorges are famous for coracle (parisal) rides. Start early, go with a licensed boatman and check water levels during the monsoon. About 2 hours by road.
8. Yercaud (day trip)

The Shevaroy Hills hill station above Salem, with its lake and boating, coffee estates and viewpoints. It is cool even in summer. About 2.5 hours by road.
