High in the forested hills on the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border stands the temple of Sri Male Mahadeshwara, known to Tamil devotees as Madeshwaran Malai or Mahadeswaran Malai. Every year lakhs of pilgrims make the journey, and for many from Salem, Erode, Namakkal and beyond, the road runs through Mettur.
About the temple

Male Mahadeshwara Hills (MM Hills) is in Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka. The temple is dedicated to Sri Male Mahadeshwara, revered as a form of Lord Shiva and remembered as a saint who lived and performed miracles in these hills. Tradition says the temple is ringed by 77 hills, and the whole area is protected forest, part of a wildlife sanctuary.
How to reach MM Hills from Mettur

- Mettur → Kolathur: head north-west from Mettur towards Kolathur.
- Kolathur → Palar: continue to Palar at the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border.
- Palar → MM Hills: climb the forest ghat road with its hairpin bends to the temple.
By car the trip usually takes around 2 to 2.5 hours one way, depending on traffic and road conditions. Buses also run towards MM Hills from the Mettur side; ask at the Mettur bus stand for current timings.
Best time to visit and festivals

- Mahashivaratri: the biggest festival, with huge crowds and night-long worship.
- Deepavali and Ugadi: major festival days with special poojas and large gatherings.
- Amavasya (new moon) days: especially popular with devotees.
- Ordinary weekdays: the quietest time for a peaceful darshan.
On festival days, book your stay early and start from Mettur well before sunrise.
Travel tips for pilgrims

Why stay in Mettur the night before

Arriving from Salem, Erode or further in the evening, then driving the ghat road in the dark, is tiring and not safe. Many pilgrims instead rest in Mettur, take a hot bath before dawn and set out fresh at first light.
At Hotel Akash Residency our 24-hour front desk is used to 4 a.m. departures, there is hot water from early morning, and our Twin and Family rooms suit pilgrim groups of three or four. Gated parking keeps your vehicle safe overnight.
